Canada World Youth
Osoyoos has been chosen as a host community for a group of twenty youth aged 18 - 21 from across Canada and Uruguay. The 10 week volunteerism/cultural exchange program will begin on June 23 and run through September 16. While in Osoyoos they will be learning more about our area, our culture and generally having an experience that will help shape their lives. During that time, Osoyoos will see them engaged in volunteer projects throughout the community. The challenge now is to find homes to host them. The youth are paired - one Canadian and one Uruguayan - so hosting involves welcoming two people into your home. As daunting as this may initially seem, it should be remembered that we were all young once and the impact that you can have on these young people will help everyone learn and grow as part of our ‘global village’. Host families are provided with financial assistance and all medical, insurance and program related expenses are covered by Canada World Youth. There are two supervisors residing in Osoyoos and there is even relief available should hosts have plans for vacations during the time period. It should be noted that the word ‘family’ means anyone willing to share their hearts and home whether they are retired empty nesters or single parents. The Canada World Youth program has been in operation since 1971 and has been offering communities and over 26,000 youth wonderful unique experiences. To have the time of your life and make a difference in someone else’s, please contact Julian Landry by June 4 at 250 485-7810 or email jlandry@cwy-jcm.org for more information on being a host. Next time you are surfing the net, check out the new website for the Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society (OLWQS). If you ever wanted to know anything about our lake, its conditions, issues impacting water quality or what you can do to help; this website has the answers and also poses some tough questions. Alicia Oslund, one of the hard working volunteer directors of the not-for-profit organization, has completely redeveloped the site. You can tell that countless hours of research and compiling information went into both the content and easy to navigate formatting. The organization monitors lake conditions and reports their findings to various government departments as well as provides education and advocacy for water related issues in our area. Greyhound on Strike On Friday May 18, Greyhound Services went on strike affecting services in Western Canada. Both passenger and freight services have been cancelled and as the situation is ever changing, you should check with our Greyhound services department at 495-3366 ext. 207 for updates.

Nk'mip Collection on Tour
From May 18 to July 15, “Drawing on Identity: The Inkameep Day School Art Collection” will be on display at the Art Gallery of the South Okanagan in Penticton. In conjunction with the display, current youth art from Glenfir School and art students from the En’owkin Centre is also on display. The Osoyoos Museum and Archives, the Osoyoos Indian Band, Dr. Andrea Walsh, Gayle Cornish and all of the artists and their families are to be congratulated for bringing the collection back into the light. The collection will also be seen in various other communities in BC over the next year. You can also see the collection on the Virtual Museums of Canada website at www.virtualmuseum.ca Osoyoos in the Media... again... and again... and again Osoyoos has been in the media….for all the right reasons lately. Destination Osoyoos works with our tourism partners to host various media in our community and the results have been outstanding in the past few weeks. Ann Campbell has again written about us in the Vancouver Sun May 8 and also in the Calgary Herald on May 12. This time she singles out Nk’Mip, Passatempo, and the Observatory B & B. Conde Nast Traveler wrote “Sunset and Vine” stating that the secret is out about the Okanagan. Spirit Ridge and Nk’Mip Cellars were singled out for the quality of their products. Joyce Wegner wrote about Osoyoos and our new resorts for “Western Canadian Resorts” magazine’s May/June issue. Sonya Procenko wrote “Star Struck” about the Observatory B & B in the same issue of “Western Canadian Resorts” magazine, so Osoyoos got a double hit. John Masters continues to support our community and penned “Four Star Resorts shine in South Okanagan” for Indulge magazine’s May/June issue. In it he mentions not only the Burrowing Owl Guesthouse, but also Watermark, Walnut Beach, Spirit Ridge and also gives passing mention to the “classic 1960s style motels” - Richter Pass, Spanish Fiesta and the Sun Beach. Laura Robin wrote “The Okanagan’s Hot - why it’s the only place in Canada to make Frommer’s Top 10 world destinations” In the May 5th article for the Ottawa Citizen, she mentions not only Nk’Mip but also Home Hardware, Rattlesnake Canyon, the Holiday Inn and Campo Marina. Media are now coming and writing about our community on a regular basis. If you would like to learn how to become more involved in our media program or if you have something exciting to share that may be of interest to media, contact Michelle Jefferson at 495-3366, extension 205. Michelle is always looking for new angles and story ideas to pitch to media, and the pitching seems to be hitting some home runs for our community.
