New Gateway Sign Landscaping has begun The Town of Osoyoos asked Destination Osoyoos to be project managers on the new Gateway Sign at the intersection of Hwy 97 and 3. Working on a very tight timeline, Sunridge Landscaping is creating the new welcome sign and all construction work, landscaping and plantings will be completed by the end of May. ![]() Improvements to the BC Visitor Centre @ Osoyoos The stucco for the exterior of the building has now been completed and the letters identifying it as the “British Columbia Visitor Centre @ Osoyoos” have been placed on two sides of our building. Now that Spring has arrived and the parking lot has been paved; the landscaping is being completed. Emerald Irrigation and Landscape Construction have been hard at work beautifying the grounds with ornamental grasses, plants and shrubs. Pathways around the property are also being constructed and soon the fountain will be lit and the water will be turned on, just in time for a busy tourism season. It’s great to see people relaxing and enjoying the sunshine on the recently installed exterior benches, too. Phone Extensions This is just a reminder about our new phone system. It provides direct access to individuals through our main numbers: (250) 495-3366 or (250) 495-5070. In order to get you to where you want to go faster, here is the staff list and their extensions: Glenn Mandziuk, Executive Director ext. 203 KUDOS to Mcdonald's Staffer You may have read a letter in the local paper about a woman who left her purse at McDonalds recently. We can all sympathize with the absolute terror that losing our identification and money creates. We, too, want to say a big thank you to the staffer and to Greg Kenzie for demonstrating that honesty is still out there. Once again, a Canadian, eh? Barb Porteous, a long time resident of Osoyoos, has spent the last 8 months fighting to regain her Canadian citizenship which was affected by a little known requirement dating back 40 years. Her passion and tenacity to right the wrong was fueled not just because of her situation, but primarily because she could help others who suddenly found that they were in similar circumstances. e are very pleased and proud to advise that Barb has asked that the BC Visitor Centre @ Osoyoos be the site of her citizenship ceremony on April 19 at 4:30pm. According to the Canadian Citizenship website “Candidates for citizenship are the focal point of the ceremony. Many have overcome barriers and obstacles in order to reach this point….” We couldn’t agree more. Canada has regained not only an outstanding citizen but a new warrior. We hope can drop by on April 19 and show your support for Barb. AGM for Destination Osoyoos - Friday, April 20 Mark your calendars. Our AGM will be held from 11:30am to 1:30pm on Friday, April 20 at the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club. Guest speakers this year are Ray Torressan Sr and Jr. who have been involved with creating a new brand for Osoyoos. Guests will be the first to see the new brand and learn more about how important branding is to a community. Trails and Parks Open House
Osoyoos has developed some wonderful public spaces like the Pioneer Walkway, Veterans Park, and Cottonwood Park to name a few. In the future, the Town of Osoyoos will be improving or redeveloping more parks and public spaces for all to enjoy. As part of this planning, the volunteer committee who make recommendations to Council, wants your input. What do you want in our public parks and trails? More or less benches? More or less boat launches? What about picnic tables? What about interpretative signs? What about public art in parks? And what do you want to see on our beach accesses? If you have an opinion, the Trails and Parks Committee wants to hear it. They will be holding a public open house on Wednesday April 25 between 6 and 8 pm at the Sonora Community Centre. Questionnaires will be handed out and a brief presentation will be provided. Come out and have your say! 2007 Visitor Guide on Website A PDF version of our 2007 Visitors’ Guide is now up on the website. The 54 page guide has been receiving a very positive response from both advertisers and the public. MJO Communications has done an outstanding job once again of producing the guide on our behalf.
