SIR - Sterile Insect Release Codling moth is the number one pest of BC’s tree fruit industry. Accidentally introduced into British Columbia from Europe in the early 1900’s, coddling moth has caused extensive damage to commercial apple and pear crops. The Sterile Insect Release (SIR) Program was initiated to manage codling moth populations and minimize pesticide applications. By releasing sterile moths, and employing various technologies, such as mating disruption, the moth population has been reduced to record low levels. The SIR program is, virtually, insect birth control on a massive scale. The prestigious $7.4 million insect rearing facility is the world’s only facility of this calibre. Its location in Osoyoos is a testament to the foresighted efforts of the Economic Development Office of the day. While the first commitment has been to the Okanagan valley, the SIR facility regularly receives global inquiries and requests for eggs and adult moths. Using the International Atomic Energy Agency’s pioneered technologies, SIR plans to market their expertise to the international commercial market in 2005. Adrian McCluskey |

Miller Springs Mountain Spring Water Miller Springs Mountain Spring Water is one of the purest natural spring waters in the world. The source is located in a pristine and picturesque mountain setting near Osoyoos. Local rancher, Dan Miller, discovered the spring several years ago. Upon in-depth research and analysis, Dan decided to market this precious commodity. Today, a state-of-the-art bottling plant and warehouse complex are located at the spring. Waters are "bottled at source", filtered and distributed throughout the Pacific Northwest. Miller Springs has been exporting to the United States since 1999. They consider American government officials to be "extremely cooperative", and the markets attractive. Dan Miller appreciates his South Okanagan location. It is central to many markets. The climate and geography attract many tourists. The diverse landscape and rural lifestyle make it a great place to live! Dan Miller |
