Business
Osoyoos has a new Wellness choice

One exciting benefit of a growing community, particularly one that has a mature demographic like Osoyoos; is that we begin to attract new businesses that offer choice in health and wellness matters.
These businesses are often
sole proprietorships but can sometimes be consortiums of like-minded individuals and complementary disciplines. What they can offer is alternate or supporting services to our mainstream health care system. Many take a holistic view of our overall health and take into account the significance of lifestyle factors, mental and spiritual wellness.

Within Osoyoos, health and wellness issues are now beginning to vie for our attention and so the timing could not be better for these new start ups. What largely drives this change is the significant population blip of baby boomers that are now approaching middle age. They are realizing that they cannot take their health for granted and they will do whatever is necessary to maintain their youthful approach to aging.

Not only are we seeing more businesses in Osoyoos promoting health care options, but we are also seeing changes and growth in other businesses that support healthy choices and improved quality of life.

Important Greyhound INFO

In September this year, Greyhound Canada held a public meeting to discuss the proposed changes in bus schedules in the South Okanagan. Greyhound made an application to the Transportation Board to reduce the number of buses running in the South Okanagan.

Greyhound has proposed to remove the 6:50 am bus from Osoyoos that runs daily and connects with the Lower Mainland as well as the Island. Greyhound also has proposed to make a change to the 3:10 pm bus out of Osoyoos to the Kootenays and East. They want to discontinue this bus to the Kootenays and re-route it to Penticton.

If these changes take effect residents of Osoyoos will no longer be able to connect with the Island in the same day and thus will have to overnight in Vancouver. Travelers will also have to leave for the Kootenays at 10:45 am and have a four hour wait in Rock Creek for a connecting bus to the Kootenays and East.

Greyhound has to have the approval of the Transportation Board to make these changes. It has been a month since the meeting and the Transportation Board has yet to make its ruling on this case. Once a ruling has been made, Greyhound Canada must give notice to the public before any changes can occur. In upcoming editions of the Outlook, we will keep you informed of any changes in this matter.

The Osoyoos Greyhound office hours are as follows:

Monday to Friday the office is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Saturdays the office is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The office is closed on Sundays and Statutory holidays.

Tourism

Co-Operative Marketing for Tourism Operators

In October, Destination Osoyoos partnered with 5 other accommodators and took advantage of a great co-operative marketing opportunity in the Edmonton Senior pull-out Travel section, targeted at the snowbird market. The piece included a 1/2 page ad + 500 word editorial piece on Osoyoos, this is a very effective and proven form of promotion combining editorial with compelling advertising. The total value of this piece was $3,500, the investment by each tourism operator was only $200 - this is an excellent Return on Investment (ROI). Click here to see what was done!

The objective of a co-operative marketing program is to create a stronger voice and more noticeable presence to attract people to our community. Over the next while Destination Osoyoos will be setting up more of these partnership opportunities. If you are interested in learning more about them please contact Sonya Konig - skonig@osoyoos.ca.

We are currently looking into a co-op advertisement in the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Associations (TOTA) GOLF Guide which had a distribution of 125,000 copies throughout BC and Alberta (included in WestWorld Alberta). From our recent survey that was conducted targeting local accommodators, it was evident that golfing is a huge drawing card for our area - rated in the top 3 activities that guests do while they are in Osoyoos!
