Business
Affordability is Critical for Osoyoos’ Future

Affordable housing is the cornerstone of a healthy and economically strong community. With limited land available for development, soaring house prices and a growing service-oriented resort economy, Osoyoos is in the
same fix as Whistler and other resort areas working to solve the affordable housing challenge. A number of tools have been developed by communities throughout North America.

Tools that range from tax shifts, density bonuses and subsidies, to land trusts, provision for zoning secondary suites and cottages, and co-housing. While many of these tools are available to our community, others require the input, leadership, or assistance of a number of key players, such as the Town, Regional District, provincial government, crown corporations, non-governmental organizations, and residents of the community.

In order to attract diversity and industry to the Osoyoos area, and especially to provide an environment that supports and is attractive to young adults and families with children, affordable housing needs to increase; and because the Town and Regional District have no control over real estate market factors, other options for housing must be explored.

Media In Town:
On the Thanksgiving weekend we hosted 10 Australian Tour Operators as part a 2 week tour through BC. This is an excellent market to attract to our community; we reassured them that we were a "must stop" on their way to-or-from the Coast and Rocky Mountains! The weather, lake, outdoor activities, nature,  wineries were just some of the things we have to offer.

Thanks to many of the local businesses for their support including Nk"mip Cellars, Spirit Ridge Vineyard & Spa Resort, Holiday Inn and Campo Marina. Some interesting market research about Australian travelers to Canada:
  • By far the most popular is the FIT Market (Free Individual Traveler) this includes Fly/Drive segment. Groups & Tours are not as popular.
  • 43% of visitors traveling to Canada are 50 years and older (empty nesters). The most common are couples touring with other couples or alone.
  • 86% of all bookings are made thru Travel Agents (Tour Operators) making it the # 1 source. They are also the main source for promoting Canada as a destination.
  • Average stay is 42 nights in Canada. Spending $7,000-$9,000 - ~ $175/person per night.
  • BC attracts 61% of the overall Australian market to Canada, of that Vancouver-Whistler-Vancouver Island (40%) being the most popular route; followed by the Rockies (21%).
  • Their main interests to visit Canada are touring (40%), nature/outdoors (8%) and winter sports (5%).

Wine Festival

The Okanagan Wine Festival is gaining popularity year after year. This year from Sept 30-Oct 9 was the celebration of the Silver Anniversary - 25 years! As you can imagine a lot has happened in that time, our wines are some of the finest and competing in the international market. The Fall Wine Festival brings a lot of attention to the valley, people travel for long distances to attend this 10 day event which includes 100+ events from winemaker dinners, seminars, touring, tastings and grape stomping. At the Visitors Centre we were certainly kept busy with lots of inquiries from people coming to attend these special wine events and wanting to learn more about what our community has to offer. Despite the unseasonal cooler weather our visitors numbers were up by 7% during the festival. We look forward to more of these events happening on our community in the future.
