Sonora Community Centre has the 'heart?'
Through the hard work and sweat equity of the pioneers of Osoyoos, a community centre was born on the shores of Osoyoos Lake many years ago. The end of that old community centre near Gyro Park left a considerable void in this |
community for a number of years. However, the end of the old community centre eventually brought about the birth of a new one when the old Elementary School was saved from the wrecking ball and began its transformation.
Strong efforts are underway by the Town’s Recreation Commission and its dedicated staff to make this new centre, aptly named Sonora Centre, a critical and central part of this community. New programs have been established, and significant physical improvements have been completed and more are planned.
To become the heart of this community, the Sonora Centre needs our help to breathe life into those halls that still echo with the sounds of children. One of the challenges the new centre has faced is financial, but over time, new amenities will be added to make it a fully functional and useful space for us all, just as the old centre was.

Tourist Survey
A tourist survey was sent out to all accommodators including hotel/motel, B&B and campgrounds/RV parks requesting feedback on the facilities and occupancy rates over the past year. The survey is due by September 30th, at which time we will be compiling the results
Media/Fam Tours
Sept 27th - Group of 8 tour operators from various parts of the UK participated in a Fam Tour of BC and spent an afternoon in Osoyoos.
This October 9th, a group of 10 tour operators from Australia will be participating in a Fam Tour of BC and are planning to spend the day in Osoyoos.
Tourism Activities
In September we saw a significant increase in our number over 2004 from locals visiting the Center. This is not only contributed by the Greyhound services we offer, but it is very noticeable locals are using the CAP computers and many are inquiring about activities to do in the area for themselves as well as on behalf of friends.
We're getting a lot of visitors from Australia as well as Europeans, particularly Dutch, are spending time in our area. Also lots of interest in golfing, wine touring and many inquiries about RV parks for now and during the winter.

Salmon Bake 2005
Another successful sold-out event with over 200 people in attendance, packing the Clubhouse at Nk'Mip RV Resort. The evening kicked off at 5pm with a Happy Hour followed by a excellent dinner, the salmon cooked in the traditional native way accompanied by a variety of salads and accompaniments. This followed with some high energy native entertainment from both the Nk'Mip Band as well as 8 magnificent dances/drummers from the Singing Loon Productions from the Shuswap Band which captured the crowds attention. The silent auction kept many on their toes as bidding was very hot. The eventful evening was finished off with a great assortment of desserts followed by music from Mat Duffus and the Pro Bono's who got the crowd dancing to the wee hours of the evening.
An event like this is only successful with the support of our community - a special thanks to the Nk'Mip Band for their hard work and contribution, as well as the local restaurants, caterers, stores and B&B's supplying the food. Also our major evening sponsors being Palcor Developments and Lintell Group. Last but not least thanks to all who contributed to the very successful Silent Auction.
THANK YOU
