Brothers Sant and Gurbachan Gill come from a background of agriculture and farming, going back generations. They have 65 acres of vines, and have been making wine since 2009. This family owned winery opened in 2011.
Our founders believe quality grapes are the key to good wine and quality grapes only come with good vineyard management. Gold Hill’s management is a family affair, rooted in tradition, and 8,000 years of training makes it second nature.
Our family owns 65 acres of vineyards in the Okanagan Valley with 24 acres on the Golden Mile and 32 acres in the heart of Osoyoos. Growing grapes is more than a business it’s our family’s passion. We sell most of our fruit, and those grapes form the backbone of several renowned B.C. wineries.
Gold Hill is a family enterprise that now embraces two generations of the Gill Family. Sant and Gurbachan’s sons are also now deeply involved in the management of the winery and the vineyards.
Gold Hill Estate Vineyard is located above the trench of the South Okanagan Valley, on the Western side of the valley. The vineyard is located on an Eastern-facing, gently sloping bench land, made up of alluvial outwashes and Okanagan floodplain deposits.
Bathed in early morning light, the vineyard warms quickly, and any dew or condensation is rapidly evaporated. Late in the day, in the peak of the hottest sun, the surrounding hills afford shade and protection, preventing sunburn or scorching and helps to reduce evapotranspiration rates. Average frost-free days and average accumulated growing heat units for this site are amongst the highest in Canada, and semi-arid climate all combine to give excellent conditions for growing wine grapes.
Planted in 2008, the site was planted with the best clones and rootstock combinations to suit the site. Clonal vines were sourced from France using ENTAV identified clones, made famous in Bordeaux and Rhone. Gold Hill Estate Vineyard has consistently produced fruit that has resulted in highly awarded wines, both domestically and internationally.
