You’ll be in good company with thousands of snowbirds returning every winter, October through April, for sunshine, lakeside walks, and a small-town pace. With one of Canada’s lowest snowfall averages and Canadian healthcare coverage, it’s an easy escape from harsher winters elsewhere.

Out of Province Medical Information

What is and isn’t covered out of province?
Under the Canada Health Act, medically necessary services (hospital and physician care) are typically covered when you travel within Canada. However, extras like ambulance, hospital transfers, and transport back to your home province are not. Check your private or group insurance for coverage, or consider purchasing additional medical insurance to avoid out-of-pocket costs.

What should I bring when travelling within Canada?
Carry your provincial health card at all times. It’s your proof of coverage and you’ll need to show it. Without it, you may have to pay upfront and seek reimbursement from your home province. Keep original receipts and proof of payment, and check with your province for any additional documentation requirements.

For more information on out-of-province coverage, contact your provincial or territorial ministry of health.
